Congratulations to first year Xtreme Head coach Brian Fleury and the entire Ashburn Xtreme 16U AA #1 team on winning the 2022 USA Hockey Tier II 16U National Championship in Troy, MI (March 31-April 4, 2022).
The 2022 win is the Ashburn Xtreme Hockey Club’s fifth USA Hockey National Championship in club history and third in the past two seasons. Previous winners being the 18U’s (2013, 2015 and 2021) and 16U’s (2021).
Team Captain Kyle Tinschert becomes the first player in the Ashburn Xtreme’s 20 year history to win back to back USA Hockey National Championships.
This team faced a lot of adversity this season. Without adversity, there cannot be progress. We progressed a ton, winning 10 of our last 11 games.
The 16’s faced two play in games just to qualify for the Virginia State Championships. After dispatching of the Potomac Patriots HP and Richmond Generals, the Xtreme faced the CBHL Regular Season and Playoff winning Reston Raiders who were undefeated. The Xtreme 16’s won a best two out three series 2-1 and claimed a Virginia State title and automatic bid to USA Hockey Nationals.
At USA National’s the Xtreme went on a 6-0 run, defeating the Houston Wild (5-2), Nashville Flyers (8-5), Manchester Flames (9-7), Utah Golden Eagles (5-4 in OT), Atlanta Fire (5-2) and Maine Gladiators in the Championship Game by a score of 6-3.
Will Mellen won all 5 games he played in net, Will Schneider led the team in goals (10) and points (16), Landon Street was the team leader with 10 assists and Aidan Harrison was the overtime hero sniping a shot past a stunned Utah goalie only 10 seconds into the 4th period.
Congrats to everyone.
Your Xtreme Family is so proud of your accomplishments.
