Ashburn Xtreme Travel Hockey Program

Please use this information when comparing travel hockey programs around the Washington, D.C., area. The Ashburn Xtreme Hockey Club is a travel-only program focused on skill development and high-level competition. The Club will inspire a commitment to sportsmanship within the individual, the team and the community. Exceptional coaching, hockey education and a comprehensive on- and off-ice training program will be the trademarks of this program.

AXHC Quick Facts

- Offers Tier II hockey teams that compete in the Capital Beltway Hockey League.

- All but two of the Xtreme’s CBHL opponents are within a 60-mile radius of Loudoun County.

- Each team also plays a competitive non-league schedule of tournaments and Tier I competition.

- Offers birth year teams for all ages of youth travel hockey (Mite through Midget U-16).

- The AXHC is the only travel program in Northern Virginia that offers three regular practice slots per week, in addition to weekend game and practice slots during the course of the 24-week season.

- AXHC offers consistent practice and game times for each team – all at the Ashburn Ice House. Team practices times and days will not change during the season.

- The AXHC Pee Wee, Bantam A and Midget A teams will rotate through a full-ice practice slot on Wednesdays while the Bantam AA and Midget AA teams incorporate a full-ice practice each week as part of their team practice sessions. These full-ice practices are in addition to the two team practices and the Wednesday skill sessions each week.

- AXHC Wednesday skill sessions involve a rotation of speed skating, coached by Wendy Marco, and individual skills practices led on-ice by AXHC Hockey Director Troy MacCormick. Wendy currently coaches power skating with the Portland Pirates of the American Hockey League and works with various Washington Capitals players. Troy is a former minor professional hockey player with three years of NCAA Division I coaching experience.

- AXHC Pee Wee and Bantam teams all have off-ice conditioning programs which are supervised by Mark Nemish, owner of Dynamic Sports Performance and conditioning coach of the NHL Washington Capitals. Mark has a state of the art facility at the Ashburn Ice House, and each team has two supervised sessions a week throughout the season.

- Each AXHC team has a comprehensive community service and fundraising programs to enhance the community environment.

Club Accomplishments

In eight short years the Xtreme has sent eight teams to the USA Hockey National Championships, six USA Southeastern District titles (ended in 2009), two Virginia State Championships (started in 2010),  twenty-four  CBHL regular season crowns, and fifteen CBHL tournament championships. The AXHC has also sent twenty teams to the USA Hockey Southeastern District tournament.

AXHC Coaching Staff

The Ashburn Xtreme coaching staff is under the direction of Hockey Director Troy MacCormick, a former NCAA and minor professional hockey player who spent three years as an assistant coach at Division I Canisius College. At Canisius Troy was responsible for recruiting student-athletes from prep schools and junior leagues in Canada and the United States. He still maintains many contacts from the recruiting process. Solid coaching is part of the AXHC’s Mission Statement. The AXHC head coaches are interviewed and selected each spring based upon their commitment to the club and their abilities to develop hockey and life skills for AXHC players.

Ashburn Xtreme – Value for Your Dollar

The AXHC Board of Directors has worked diligently to keep costs in check the past four years while the cost of ice rental has steadily risen. While comparing cost of various Tier I and Tier II programs, consider the amount of practice ice and game ice available to AXHC players in relation to cost. The AXHC is easily one of the best values – if not the best -- in the Washington, D.C., area in terms of cost per ice slot.

The anticipated cost for each program for the 2010-11 season is as follows:

Mites $2,150

Squirts $2,430

Pee Wees $3,270

Bantams $3,270

Midgets $2,700

* This cost includes two team practices per week, Wednesday skills sessions, full-ice practices for Pee Wee, Bantam and Midget players, weekend game and practice slots, practice jersey, hockey socks, head coach stipend, goalie training and administrative costs.  The Xtreme will continue to do their off ice training  under the supervision and expertise of Mark Nemish, current Director of Strength & Conditioning for the NHL Washington Capitals.  Mark operates Dynamic Sports Performance (DSP),  the new state-of-the-art 2200sq. ft. facility  located at the Ashburn Ice House.  DSP boasts some of the most innovative and diverse training equipment from around the world!   All teams Pee Wee and Bantams, will have two weekly workouts which will be supervised by DSP's professional staff.

Administration & Governance

The Ashburn Xtreme’s day-to-day operations are handled by Executive Director Gary Pouliot.  Gary has coached in the Xtreme program for seven years (2004-2008, 2010), guiding all his teams to berths in the Southeast District tournaments.  In 2004, 2005, 2010 he guided his teams to the prestigious USA Hockey National Championships.  Gary graduated from the Univerisity of New Hampshire with a bachelor's degree in physical education. Upon graduation, Gary served as an officer in the United States Marine Corps for five years. For the past 23 years Gary has served as a Special Agent in the FBI.

The AXHC is operated by set of policies and procedures that are available on-line in the Xtreme Handbook. The Hockey Director and Executive Director, who are not parents of players in the club, set and implement all on- and off-ice policies and procedures. The AXHC Board of Directors is charged with the financial stability of the organization and the HD and ED report directly to the Board of Directors.
